Project Darkstar v0.9.6 now available!

The Project Darkstar team is pleased to announce the release of Project Darkstar v0.9.6.  In Jim Waldo's words, the "Project Darkstar team decided that we would take the plunge, all the way, and try to open up what we are doing to the community," starting with this release.  For more details on the team's embrace of open source culture, see Jim's latest blog entry: http://blogs.sun.com/scalinggames/

Highlighting the 0.9.6 release are some interfaces changes, and underlying implementation, that enable the platform to run across multiple machines.   Over the coming months, the Project Darkstar team will be working to make the multinode operation highly performant, focusing on scalability as a priority.  The full list of client and server side changes introduced in this release follows:

Client:
  • - Use ByteBuffer for message parameters
  • - Remove subset channel sends
  • - Remove SessionId
  • - Simplify SGS protocol
  • - Remove C client, which has not yet been updated for recent changes

Server:
  • - Support multi-node operation
  • - Add WatchdogService and NodeMappingService
  • - Modify the TaskService, ChannelService, and ClientSessionService touse the new services
  • - API changes:
  • - Use ByteBuffer for channel and session message parameters
  • - Remove subset channel sends
  • - Make ClientSession and Channel managed objects
  • - Add Channel message filtering
  • - Loosen consistency guarantees for obtaining channel sessions
  • - Add exceptions for resource failures
  • - Make miscellaneous channel convenience changes
  • - Add new Delivery constant
  • - Add type parameter to ManagedReference
  • - Implement ManagedReferenceImpl.equals and hashCode
  • - Remove support for running multiple applications
  • - Detect managed objects with serialization readResolve or writeReplace methods
  • - Simplify scheduler and kernel interfaces
  • - Simplify SGS protocol
  • - Increase default BDB data store cache size

Content Wish List

Earlier this week I proposed a Content Wish List wiki page that I hope we will all use as a community to organize our thoughts about specific content that we would like to see created, and that we believe would help grow our community.  Those of us in the community who are willing and able to create these content items could then use this Wish List to help guide our efforts.

So far, I've received some excellent feedback.  Please keep it coming!  You can help get this idea off to a good start by contributing your thoughts about what we need most to the "Content Wish List'" topic in the General Discussion forum.

I'm looking for ideas for code examples, tutorials, white papers, demos, FAQs, or anything else that you believe our community needs.  What do you need, or what would have been very helpful for you to have had, to make it easier for you to be more successful with Project Darkstar? Equally important, how would you prioritize your need (or the need of someone following in your shoes) for particular content items?  Specifics, please!

I'll consolidate responses to this thread into an initial Wish List and publish that list as the new wiki page (assuming the wiki page is deemed a generally acceptable idea).  Once the page has been created, we will be able to add, edit, or comment on the ideas presented directly on the wiki page.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas -

++++++++

Project Darkstar Roadmap Published!

Who wants to talk about where Project Darkstar is and/or should be headed?  Some of us have been putting our heads together and thinking about what we could do to enable and stimulate active community dialog on the subject.  Here are two ideas that we came up with:

  • Publish a Project Darkstar Roadmap provided by the core technology development team to summarize the work currently being done for the next Project Darkstar release, and a list of outstanding, high priority items on the team's to-do list.  Take a look!

  • Have some of the core technology developers publish blogs about what they're working on, so we can all get a better view into the team's everyday thinking.  Check out Jim Waldo's blog and Seth Proctor's blog for a taste of what's on their minds!

So, this is a start  - what do you think?  About publishing the roadmap, about what's coming next, about what's on the to-do list?  What's important to you, and what's not? What's missing?  Please provide your comments and feedback on the roadmap discussion thread started in the community forums.  Let's talk!

Hey all!

We have finished an initial re-organization of the Projects system.  If you click on "Projects" it will now take you to a self-help wiki based index where you can post a pointer to your project and where it is hosted along with a short description.

If you don't know where to go to get your project hosted, there are links right on the wiki front page.

So lets start getting links to all the exciting Project Darkstar stuff out there into the index!
